  • There was labor unrest in St. Petersburg due to prices of food and daily necessities
  • A priest name Father George Gapon formed an assembly of Russian workers in 1903 as conditions in the factories were harsh and the health and safety of the workers were shown little concern
  • 1904, price for food and other necessities rose and wages cut by 20 percent
  • 110,000 workers went on strike in St. Petersburg.
  • In January 22, 1905, Father Gapon went to the Winter Palace with a group of workers to present the Czar with a petition
  • The petition entitled an election of duma (a council or official assembly), freedom of speech and assembly, guarantee of fair trials and amnesty for political prisoners
  • More labor legislation, an eight-hour work day, a reduction in indirect taxes and the introduction of a graduated income tax
  • End the war and 135,000 people sign it
  • Gapon and the workers were followed by a group of 150,000 people that would assemble peacefully outside of the palace.
  • The priest was hoping that the Czar would grant the reforms so that the discontent of the workers would be lowered
  • Palace guards came out shooting the crowd of people
  • Over 100 people were killed, with about 300 people wounded
  • This was known as The Bloody Sunday and it was that day that the people lost their faith in the Czar.
